Hello, everyone:
Welcome to room 21! This e-mail will be my weekly communication format throughout the school year. In creating my e-mail distribution list, I pulled the listed e-mail contacts from our district’s Skyward gradebook/attendance database along with the e-mail addresses that were added on Open House night. If you would like to be removed from this list, would like to add a second or third address, or would prefer a paper copy, please let me know.
I will do my very best to send this on Mondays, or by the very latest Tuesdays. From week to week, there may be more or less to read, but I do appreciate you finding the time to read when you have the opportunity to do so.
Reading/Language Arts:
In reading, we are working with our second selection, Blasting Off to Space Academy. The Weekly Focus Wall will be sent home with your child today (Tuesday). This will highlight our spelling words and vocabulary words, as well as our emphasis on the specific grammar, fluency, and reading comprehension for the given week. The students will be assessed this THURSDAY on the spelling and vocabulary words. There are study resources available on our classroom website (msday5.weebly.com/).
Weekly Reading Log #3 is due on Friday. As a reminder, for this weekly assignment, students are expected to read at least 15 minutes per night and log a few summary sentences (3 or more) based on what they read. I am also asking parents to sign-off on the sheet to verify that their child fulfilled that responsibility every night. This will help to support our larger goal of reading one book per month for our Genre Reading Passports.
Mathematics:
This week, we will focus on naming, comparing, and rounding decimals to the thousandths place. We will also continue to work on our basic facts with XtraMath. The basic facts, more importantly how quickly they can recall them, will be crucial as we get into greater conceptual topics throughout the year. Please take the time to review the facts on a nightly basis.
The students were assigned their second Weekly Math Assignment. This is another weekly/nightly homework component. Students are encouraged to have parental eyes review their Weekly Math before handing it in on Fridays.
STEM:
In STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) this week, we will continue to explore digital citizenship and ways to have an appropriate online presence. Students are working with a partner to create a short movie explaining the topic they’ve explored and will share it with the class.
In October, we plan to celebrate Imagination’s Day of Play, inspired by Caine’s Arcade, with the Cardboard Challenge (cardboardchallenge.com). If possible, please start collecting cardboard that we may use to build our creations!
Thank you to the families that have already donated!
Important Reminders:
Spelling and Vocabulary Tests: Thursday, September 28th
Due to the half day activities on Friday, we will have both of our end of the week
assessments on Thursday this week.
Half Day: Friday, September 29th
Dismissal at 12:00 p.m.
Angling Road Rally: Friday, October 6th
This is our one and only fundraiser for the year, so we greatly appreciate your support. Information regarding the Rally can be found on Angling’s PTO website. Thanks for gathering those donations!
Sherman Lake Camp Parent Meeting: Wednesday, November 8th

Best regards,
Miranda Day
